Greetings Fleet Commanders! Today we’ve got something for the Dark Side from Fantasy Flight’s Star Wars Armada game; the Star Wars Armada Imperial Gladiator-class Star Destroyer. Smaller than the more familiar cousins we’re used to seeing in the Star Destroyer Family, this is the light cruiser the Imperials need for supporting their bigger, less maneuverable warships.
Enter the Gladiator-class Star Destroyer. It lacks the punch of its big brothers and the shields aren’t terrific, but she has what the bigger ships have lacked; speed. Rather than cede the notion of maneuvering in combat to the Rebel fleet; the Imperials now have some options for forcing the Rebel player’s ships to take shots on less protected side rather than simply keeping shields to the big guns of the larger warships.
While the ship holds the general classic “wedge” shape of Imperial warships, it’s split into a double hull to make room for a large hangar in the middle. It’s currently unclear if this will play a more interesting role in later rule updates of the game, but for now, it’s just a neat detail.
From Fantasy Flight:
“Originally designed as an escort for larger Star Destroyers, the smaller Gladiator-class Star Destroyer measures roughly five-hundred meters and proved most effective as a long-range patrol ship deployed to the fringes of the galaxy. There, its brutal armament of turbolasers, concussion missiles, laser cannons, and TIE squadrons allowed it to quickly subjugate any local opposition to the Galactic Empire.
The Gladiator-class Star Destroyer Expansion Pack for Star Wars: Armada introduces one detailed and pre-painted miniature that the expansion’s two ship cards allow you to add to your fleet as either a Gladiator I or Gladiator II. You’ll also find all the command dials and tokens that you need to bring your Star Destroyer to battle, along with ten upgrade cards that can enhance its attacks, allow it to move between attacks, and improve its accuracy.”
With an assortment of upgrades and some new combat dynamics, this is one expansion every Imperial Fleet Commander will want to have a couple of. Additionally, many of the upgrades are interchangable across your fleet, bringing some new options to the base set and the other expansion packs.
Pick a couple up today to partner with your bigger Imperial ships and we’ll see you out amongst the stars. Good luck, and may the Force be with you!
